The Summit of Silence: The Sword and the Shield (Weapons of Liberation) Part III

If the ego—the false sense of a separate "I"—is the heavy armor that keeps us isolated, how do we finally take it off?

The ancient masters knew that you cannot fight the mind using the mind. You cannot think your way out of a prison made of thoughts. Instead, they gave us profound tools of subtraction—weapons designed not to harm, but to liberate us from illusion.

Both the Diamond Sutra and the Upanishads offer methods that act like a sharp blade, cutting away the untrue so the true may be revealed.

The Upanishadic Sword: Neti, Neti

In the Yogic tradition of the Upanishads, the primary tool for slicing through illusion is the meditative practice of Neti, Neti.

This Sanskrit phrase translates to "Not this, Not this." It is a relentless practice of peeling back the layers of your perceived identity. When you sit in meditation, you observe what arises and systematically negate it as your true self:

  • A sensation arises in the leg. You ask: Am I this changing body? Neti, Neti (Not this).

  • A wave of anxiety washes over you. You ask: Am I these swirling emotions? Neti, Neti.

  • A clever idea pops into your head. You ask: Am I these passing thoughts? Neti, Neti.

You systematically slice away everything that is temporary, everything that comes and goes, until you arrive at the quiet, unchanging witness that remains behind it all.

The Buddhist Blade: The Diamond Cutter

Centuries later, the Buddha offered his disciples the "Diamond Cutter." A diamond is used as a metaphor because it is the hardest substance, capable of cutting through anything else.

The Buddha saw how easily our religious minds cling to spiritual labels, turning even beautiful concepts like "nirvana" or "compassion" into just another trophy for the ego to grasp. His method of liberation was a radical formula of linguistic negation that he repeats throughout the Sutra:

"What the Buddha calls a 'world' is not a real world, therefore it is called a 'world'."

This confusing sentence is a tool. He is teaching us to use words and concepts to navigate our daily lives, but to instantly cut through our emotional attachment to them. He is fracturing the rigid boxes we put reality into.

The Art of Subtraction

Look closely, and you will see that Neti, Neti and the Diamond Cutter are the exact same blade striking from different angles.

They reveal a beautiful truth about these ancient paths: spiritual awakening is not about adding more concepts, more complex knowledge, or more rigid beliefs to your overburdened mind. It is the profound art of unburdening yourself. You do not build a spiritual life; you chip away the heavy marble of the ego until the masterpiece underneath is finally revealed.

In our final post, we will explore what happens when the chipping away is finished, and we reach the summit where these two paths converge.

  1. Gautam I must congratulate you for incredible spiritual achievement..your commitment to silence for so many days is a testament of your discipline....what a profound inward journey ✨️

Let me come to your Theory or art of subtraction ..

I truly feel Neti neti or blade striking..so far is not for me....may be I am not ready yet or don't belong to these particular schools of thought or I don't see that way..

But again here ..you very well said and I happen to buy your words "you don't build a spirituallife you chip away the heavy marble of ego untill underneath is finally revealed"

You know when I put my step forward I find for me theory or art of subtraction seems eliminating toxic relationship, excessive possession and bad habits..so on and so forth..
And by subtracting I can try to create space for what truly matters..to me.

Your blog forced me to see...and I started thinking that way when enough is subtracted then
    there is ....Fewer thoughts
    no struggle ,no effort.🤔

And I happen to come to a conclusion that .... silence means..to me..for me specifically..it is Alert silence and no mental fog..😊

Hats off to you ,I am deeply impressed by your dedication towards silence...it takes immense will power to achieve🙏
